I know the days are getting shorter and mornings are cooler. It's hard to believe we have been in school for six weeks. Progress reports will be sent home this week and students have been busy. I find myself often saying "Where did the time go?" Everyone has been working so hard.
Did you hear our classroom has bees? Not to worry, they are not alive. In science we create bee sticks and pollinated and cross -pollinated our Fast Plants. They look amazing and have even started to reproducing more seeds. For more pictures click here.
In Writing, students have been making the final revisions and edits of their narrative stories. We have been using a writers workshop tip. Ask you student what CUPS and ARMS mean. I love the opportunity to seat with each student and conference about their writing. It allows me to understand their strengths and weaknesses as writers. We have some fabulous writers in B023.
In Reading, we are talking and illustrating Story Elements. Story Elements are characters, setting, plot and theme. This lesson has been fun because we are using some of my favorite picture books; Owen by Kevin Henkes and Corduroy by Dan Freedman to name a few. We are using these old favorites to illustrate story elements. Soon, the students will be assigned a flipbook of story elements to complete at home and school. For this assignment they will use a book from their summer reading or books read in September. I still have the summer reading lists, not to worry. Reading and good books selections are never a worry in this class. Students are always asking for more time to read and share their book recommendations.
Lastly, I have added a Wish List page to my website. Any donations are greatly appreciated.
Please look for the progress reports on Friday. They will need to be signed by a parent and the student and returned to school.
Thank you for the support at home. Have a wonderful week!
