Sorry this blog will be short and sweet. We have many happenings in class this week I am getting prepared for and find there is not enough hours in day. Our first Read and Relax Friday was a huge hit. Thank you to the families that sent in donations. There are some pictures of my friends on this website. Check out the picture page.
Also, we joined and are participating in a Global Read Aloud. See the Reading page for more information or ask your student. We are in the process of connecting with other students in the United States for a book discussion. We will be connecting through Skype once I hear back from another teacher in California.
This week we will be starting a formal spelling program called Words Their Way. Students will be assigned homework on Monday and it must be return by Wednesday. The spelling test will take place on Fridays. We will also be assigning the Fifth Grade High Frequency words for extra challenge.
In Science, we continue our growing our plants while exploring in more depth the functions and parts of plants. I am hoping to get students outside in our trails this week. Please make sure they come to school with the right shoes.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. We have been doing a great job managing homework, music lesson and be respectful throughout the day. I am so proud of all my students. Thank you for all your support at home. Social Studies test is on Tuesday and a Math test is on Friday. I know all the students have been preparing and will do great.
Enjoy your week.
Well, I never considered myself a "green thumb". Myself along with 100 fifth grades planted 384 seeds (12 seeds per team, 8 teams per class, 4 classes). I am happy to report they are growing. I will try to remember to take pictures this week. Our science class has been really hands on and the students have been following right along. Some of your homes might have a Ziploc bag with kidney bean inside stuck to a window. We studied the parts of a seed and learned about germination. I asked the students to keep some record of their "at home" experiment.
Orchestra, Band and Chorus are in full swing. Students have started their lessons. Although lesson schedules rotate weekly, some weeks students will miss an academic class. We have instructed and encourage students to visit those classes they missed at recess to get caught up. If you have any questions about Fine Arts please do not hesitate to contact me.
Must Read Mondays! is tomorrow. Instead of asking students to read 20 minutes a night, I am asking students to read at least 2 hours a week. I have many enthusiastic readers in my homeroom, so I can't imagine this will be a problem.
Lastly, but certainly not least I was so pleased with the turn out for open house. If you missed my presentation, feel free to browse the slides. It was such pleasure meeting all of you. Your children are amazing and I love being their teacher. I know along with your support, we will help them thrive both academically and personally.
A quick heads up about this week! Picture Day is Tuesday (our time is in the afternoon). I am hoping to get students outside later in the week to explore leaves in woods near school. I think I have all my permission slips, if not I will be sending it home again or you can click here to print and sign. This Friday period 8, is "Read and Relax Friday" I will send more information about this home tomorrow. Click here for the memo.
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather. Have a great week.
